COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT SERVICE

: Community Development Service (CDS) is a year-round programme of the NYSC in which corps members are organized to work with local communities to promote and execute development projects in their host communities. The CDS policy of the NYSC has been reviewed and tailored towards achieving the objectives of the United Nations fostered Millennium Development Goals (MDGS) and the National Economic Empowerment Development Strategy (NEEDS). -

This programme has its ideological base in the need to correct the imbalance in the socio-economic development of our country where rural communities are neglected and infrastructural facilities are concentrated in the urban areas. There is also the necessity to come to grips with the problems our under-development and our over-dependence on government for all our basic needs. Community Development Service is therefore a complementary assignment for corps members which is expected to be undertaken concurrently with their primary assignment. It is basically the avenue for promoting, facilitating and strengthening self-help projects at local communities.

OBJECTIVES OF THE CDS

The CDS is aimed at:

Impacting positively and practically on improvement in rural community life by motivating the people towards self-help projects for greater self-reliance.

Developing the spirit of entrepreneurship in the corps members, thus, de-emphasizing dependence on public service employment and promoting self-employment.

Exposing corps members to diverse traditions and customs of the host communities

Providing the forum for corps members to experiment with ideas and translate them into concrete achievements thereby relying less on foreign technology and encouraging the use of local raw materials in the execution of projects.

. Harnessing the enormous talents and skills of corps members into an effective machinery of change in our rural communities.

Providing on-the-job training and experience for corps members in areas of health, Law, Education, Agriculture, Social Services, Engineering, etc

Providing complementary service in our National development activities, by ensuring that our under-privileged population learns basic techniques of self-help through the appropriate technology concept being promoted by NYSC.

       CLASSIFICATION OF CDS

In the NYSC, there are abundant energy, skills, potentials, experience, and knowledge that can be harnessed for national development. This is made possible through various CDS programmes which are classified into three (3) broad categories namely: group, individual and collaborative.

•  GROUP CDS

These are projects initiated and executed by corps members in group such as construction works, public enlightenment campaigns, legal aid services, drug-free campaigns, landscaping, environmental protection, etc. These projects are compulsory and are organized on weekly basis for all corps members in their host communities.

•  INDIVIDUAL CDS

This is a project initiated and undertaken by a corps member individually or in collaboration with one or more corps members.

•  COLLABORATIVE CDS

NYSC in collaboration with some national and international agencies use corps members to carry out programmes in realization of global trend of inter-dependence and partnership in tackling common human challenges.
