NYSC Media Department

Brief Introduction / Background

The imperative of the electronic media including radio, television and digital platforms as effective media of information dissemination in every human endeavour cannot be underestimated, especially in a youth-oriented recognised organisation like the National Youth Service Corps which annually mobilises and deploys about Four Hundred Thousand prospective Corps Members from tertiary institutions within Nigeria and shores of Nigeria for one year national service.

Consequently, one of the new departments that were approved by the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation and created in 2024 is the NYSC Media, which was carved out of the Community Relations Division of the then Press and Public Relations (PPRU), now Information and Public Relations Unit (IPRU), where the Radio and Television Stations were domiciled. The two stations were already commissioned in April 2022, after obtaining the statutory broadcast license and authorisation from the relevant authorities.

Before the creation of the Media Department, it was observed that the manpower, expertise and attention required for effective operations of the radio and television stations were grossly inadequate as it shared manpower with the Information and Publications Divisions of the Press and Public Relations Unit. The enormity of the schedule in both areas of Media Communication and Public Relations was overwhelming, hence the need to establish the Media Department.

Approved Structure, Divisions and Branches

The organogram of the NYSC Media Department as approved is captured in the table below:

Leadership and Operations

With the creation of the NYSC Media Department, a Director (SGL 17) was appointed to head the department. Furthermore, three Deputy Directors were appointed to man the three divisions of Radio/TV Services, Advert & Commercials, and Engineering & Technical Services. The six (6) branches are headed by Assistant Directors.

The department has fully taken off and is ensuring effective operations and administration of NYSC Radio and Television towards the realisation of the set objectives:

  • NYSC Radio is currently transmitting terrestrially on 88.3 FM.
  • NYSC Television is hosted by the Nigerian Communication Satellite Limited (NIGCOMSAT) and can be accessed on their free-to-air satellite platform.
  • For online transmission, the department has developed an all-in-one app and a media website as alternative and complementary platforms to the radio and television stations.
  • The department is currently uploading contents into the app and the website, which can also be accessed through its social media handles.

Inspite of the fierce market competition occasioned by the numerous and existing media stations in the FCT, the division's effort to secure commercial patronage has started yielding fruits. One of the few sponsorships was from the NNPC/Kudimata project, for which the department remitted over Seven Hundred Thousand Naira to the Treasury Single Account (TSA).
Engineering & Technical Services
  1. Oversees the schedule of duties of staff in the technical division and monitors the daily duty roster for technical officers.
  2. Ensures the proper functioning of all technical equipment in the station.
  3. Coordinates the installation and maintenance of the technical equipment in the two stations.
  4. Supervises the technical operations of the two stations.
  5. On-the-job capacity training for technical officers.
Due to the highly technical requirement of this division, the department had to engage two broadcast technicians from the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria on retainership basis, in order to regularly service the broadcast equipment. The division has developed an all-in-one app and a media website, in addition to the maintenance of several social media platforms.
